Top Television Selections: Seven Can't-Miss Films This Week

Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold satire tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore offers an inspired acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to starring in an aerobics show on TV. Edged out due to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome procedure called this experimental method. This creates a youthful duplicate named Sue, resulting in a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller stars Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who takes a break from reporting on global conflict to join a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other filthy rich individuals. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and all passengers insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, on Netflix

Presence Film

Steven Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities in this clever ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of the spirit. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his cult stardom via this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to visit a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire superfan Javi. Recruited by the CIA to gather intel on the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's contained scarefest holds up well even without a sequel. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the children anxious. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads the worst. Yet the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, on Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though Chastain achieves to depict the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's second offering from the filmmaker delivers a intelligence thriller as precise as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of understated style, so a delicious mind game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
