In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
