The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
