RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
