Cars in Germany's Town Found Smeared with Swastikas in Blood, Law Enforcement State

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Law Enforcement
Officers reported they were notified by a resident who noticed a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored liquid

Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report early analysis show the liquid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials announced they were working "to solve the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.

A high-ranking representative said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
